About the Journal

Aim:

South Health and Policy is an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing scholarly dialogue and research on the intersections of public health, health systems, and policy, with particular emphasis on the realities and challenges of the Global South. The journal’s primary aim is to foster critical and evidence-based discussions that inform equitable, effective, and context-specific health strategies and policy frameworks. It seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across public health, economics, sociology, epidemiology, and political science, while foregrounding local knowledge and community-based approaches in diverse socio-political and cultural settings.

Scope:

South Health and Policy welcomes original research articles, critical reviews, case studies, and policy analyses that address health and policy challenges through regional, national, and international lenses. The journal prioritizes work that contributes to social justice, health equity, and the strengthening of health systems, especially in under-resourced or transitional contexts. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Health Policy and Governance: Analyses of health policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation at local, national, and transnational levels, including regulatory frameworks, institutional dynamics, and political determinants of health.
  • Public Health Systems and Services: Research on the organization, delivery, and financing of public health services, workforce development, primary care, and health system resilience.
  • Social Determinants of Health: Studies exploring the impact of social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors on population health, with a focus on marginalized and underserved communities.
  • Global Health and South-South Cooperation: Contributions that critically assess global health initiatives, knowledge transfer, and collaborative efforts between countries of the Global South.
  • Epidemiology and Population Health: Quantitative and qualitative research on disease patterns, health behaviors, and demographic trends shaping health outcomes in different contexts.
  • Health Equity and Human Rights: Interventions and critical analyses aimed at reducing health disparities and promoting rights-based approaches to healthcare.
  • Community Health and Indigenous Knowledge: Explorations of participatory and culturally grounded health practices, including traditional medicine and local governance in health promotion.
  • Health Communication and Education: Studies on public health messaging, digital health literacy, media engagement, and the sociopolitical context of health information.
  • Mental Health and Psychosocial Wellbeing: Research on mental health policy, service accessibility, and culturally appropriate care models, especially in post-conflict or resource-limited settings.
  • Interdisciplinary and Cross-Sectoral Approaches: Work integrating insights from anthropology, economics, law, environmental science, and other disciplines to inform health policy and system design.

Visibility and Open Access:
The journal follows an open access model, which maximizes the visibility of published articles.

Frequency of publication:
The journal follows a continuous publication model, where articles after acceptance are typeset and published in a single volume per year. Therefore, the call for submissions is permanently open.

Speed of publication:
The journal manages the following times of the editorial process: 5 days for the first response from the section editor or pass to peer review; 30 to 45 days responses from the editor on the observations of peer reviewers; 5 to 7 days in layout, metadata uploading and publication on the journal's site.
The editorial team combines rigorous peer review with the efficient timing of the editorial process, which is done exclusively in electronic format.

Promotion and dissemination strategy:
The journal develops a strategy to promote and position published articles on social networks and web platforms, which contributes to increase exposure and access to the articles.
